Placer County Jail Roster

Placer County Jail Roster — a public resource that allows anyone to check if a specific person is in custody in the county jail. Public information about individuals currently held or recently released from custody can be found on the PlacerCourt.us website. Additionally, data is available through the official website of the Placer County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division, by phone, or during a personal visit to the jail. The roster is maintained by the Corrections division of the county sheriff's office; it is regularly updated and posted on the county's official website. The search allows you to determine custody status, bail amount, and charges.

Search Current Inmates in Placer Jail

Placer County has two main correctional facilities — Auburn Jail and South Placer Jail. Both facilities are under the jurisdiction of the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Below are ways to search for inmate information.

Online Search

  1. Go to the Press Log – Arrests page, where a 10-day arrest log is published.
  2. To view the full Jail In-Custody Roster, use the link on the same page — the roster contains bail information and other booking-related details.
  3. If the roster is displayed as a list, use the browser's search function (Ctrl+F / Cmd+F) to find a last name.
  4. To search court records and related public information, visit PlacerCourt.us.

To start your search, you will need:

  • The person's full legal name (last name and first name)
  • Booking number, if known

Records of juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

By Phone

Call the jail directly. The operator can confirm if the person is in custody if you provide the full name or booking number.

In-Person Visit

You can visit the jail lobby during business hours. There is an information window for visitors at both facilities.

Find Placer Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created when a person is officially admitted to a correctional facility. This is not the same as an arrest — booking occurs at the jail after the detainee is delivered.

During the booking process, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges
  • Name of the arresting agency (sheriff's office, Lincoln police, CHP, etc.)
  • Bail amount, if set
  • Photo of the detainee

These records are available in several ways. The quickest is through the online In-Custody Roster on the sheriff's office website. If you need records that are no longer displayed in the active roster (e.g., after a person is released), submit a request through the Public Records Request system. The sheriff's office uses an online form for the convenience of submitting such requests in accordance with the California Public Records Act.

A separate Records Unit of the sheriff's office serves the public and can assist with obtaining copies of reports and other documents.

Search the Placer Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The county inmate roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the person's last name. If the system supports filtering, add the first name to narrow down the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one mistake can result in no matches.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name has a hyphen or apostrophe.
  • If the roster is displayed as a full list without a search field, use Ctrl+F in the browser.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, this is the most accurate way to find a specific record. The number is usually provided at the time of arrest or communicated to relatives during the first contact with the facility.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure the name is entered correctly — use the legal name, not a nickname.
  2. The person may have already been released — the roster only shows those currently in custody.
  3. There may be a delay between the time of arrest and the appearance of the record in the roster due to the booking process.
  4. Call the jail directly — staff can manually check the status.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Placer

The inmate roster is updated throughout the day, but this does not happen instantly. There is usually some time between the actual arrival of the detainee at the facility and the appearance of their record in the online system — sometimes several hours, depending on staff workload and time of day.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay after arrest. The booking process includes identification, photographing, and medical examination. Until it is completed, the record will not appear.
  • Disappearance after release. When a person is released (on bail, by court decision, or after serving time), the record is removed from the active roster. This is not an archive.
  • Only current custody. The roster shows those who are in custody right now. For historical data, a separate public records request is needed.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a last name may be recorded with an error during booking, complicating the search.

The sheriff's office also publishes a 10-day arrest log (Press Log), which is updated daily. This log covers a broader time frame than the current inmate roster and may be useful if the person has already been released.

If you need information beyond what the online roster displays, contact the sheriff's office's Public Records Request system. Most records maintained by the county are available for review in accordance with the California Government Code and the California Public Records Act.
